From The Field: Grapes – February 2, 2021

CHILE RAINS: On January 31st 2021, heavy rainfall hit pivotal growing regions in Chile. We have our local Quality Control personnel onsite evaluating the impact to our program. The same personnel will continue to closely inspect all product packed in the SUNRAYS® label to ensure the highest quality is delivered.

FROM COQUIMBO, CHILE:

“For Allison, it is 70% colored and still growing with size around 20-21mm and range of brix between 13 and 19. It has a good cluster arrangement with good ventilation between berries allowing the air passing through the cluster and avoiding fungus presence. For Autumn Royal, it is currently with 15 brix and 19mm average size.” – Agricom Ltda.

FROM VALPARAISO, CHILE:

“Last week we were packing Black Seedless and will probably resume this Friday. As clusters dry, we observe no significant damage for Black Seedless. Autumn Royals are not currently ready for harvest but are developing color as it should. It appears to have no damage and looks very healthy and right on schedule. The ARRA15 also showed minimal to no damage.” – Exportadora Quintay

“For Thompson, the fruit is fully matured and ready to be harvested. Brix is 16 and up, sizes are 17-18mm and color between green and milky green. For Timco, it is 50% colored and still in growing process with size around 17-18mm. Summer pruning is in process in order to get a better lighting inside the crop and letting the cluster to develop red color.” – Agricom Ltda.

Timco™ grapes from week of February 2, 2021

“For Thompson, rainstorm got 24mm of water into our crops, but lucky for us it was only in one day and we could handle it with products for botrytis and a protective one for fruit split caused by rain. In addition, we contract helicopter services for drying off the fruit. It was very helpful. Although we keep our eyes every day on the fruit and keep monitoring any damages. Sizing is around 20mm average and brix is 17, is a year with great and big fruit for us. We are waiting for the berry to achieve its optimal finish between sugar, acidity and firmness to start the harvest next week.” – Agroindustrias Quilaco

OUR OUTLOOK

Recent rains in pivotal growing regions in Chile (Aconcagua to the South) will undoubtedly have an impact on global supplies and markets beginning in March. In the meantime, we continue to see late Peruvian volume from Ica packed for our program, as well as Chilean grapes from more Northern areas that were not impacted by weather.

OUR OUTLOOK

The rains in Chile will impact supplies of red seedless in late February throughout most if not all of the deal, although it is possible that greens will be hurt more. There are good volumes of red seedless on the water, but we need more time to assess promotional opportunities for later in the season. Supplies of SUNRAYS® are steady throughout February, but not necessarily in promotable volumes.
